RADS 4 to 5 Migration Information
The current version of the Rutgers Antivirus Delivery Service (RADS 5) was released to
the university community on August 25th. In an effort to monitor the transition,
handle any unforeseen issues and obstacles, and minimize additional strain on the
helpdesk, the servers that support existing RADS 4 users have remained in place and
the RADS 5 upgrade has been opt-in. Since its release, approximately
53% of RADS users have upgraded to RADS 5.
Over the course of the next few months, the existing RADS 4 infrastructure will be
phased-out. The remaining 47% RADS users running version 4 will
need to upgrade to version 5 before the servers are decommissioned.
Important Notes:
-
If you are prompted for a password to uninstall the Trend Micro OfficeScan Client,
enter the word password .
-
If you are using Trend Micro's firewall to protect your computer, you will
need to re-configure your firewall rules after upgrading.
-
If you decide to manually upgrade and are prompted to reboot your computer,
please do so. The upgrade process is more likely to fail if you decide not
to reboot the computer.
-
Server-side upgrades will result in a series of changes to the OfficeScan icon
on your computer.
-
If you are running RADS 4 on an operating system that is no longer supported by
Trend Micro's OfficeScan 8.0 (i.e. Windows 95, 98, ME) or if you have an
Intel Itanium processor, your OfficeScan installation will break if your
installation is only caught by the 'Final Changes' step (step 5 below). It is
difficult to predict which users will be caught by the 'Final Changes' step, so
you are strongly urged to download and install RADS 5 at your earliest
convenience.
If your OfficeScan client is upgraded automatically, the OfficeScan icons in the
corner of your screen should go through a series of changes over the course of
5 to 10 minutes. In some rare cases, you may be prompted to reboot your computer
The migration process will be handled in the following order:
-
Manual Upgrades:
-
All users running RADS 4 are strongly encouraged to upgrade now.
If you are using a competitive antivirus product you are encouraged to consider installing
RADS 5. This is particularly important if your subscription for virus definition
updates has lapsed, as you will not be protected from the latest threats without recent
definitions. RADS is offered free of charge and the updates will continue indefinitely.
-
On-Campus Students:
-
Beginning this spring, students running RADS 4 will be required to upgrade
to RADS 5 as a part of RuCompliant. This upgrade will be necessary in order to
gain network access. Please note that users running Linux and/or Macintosh
will not be subject to this requirement, nor will users running other supported
antivirus products (McAfee, Norton, Avg, ClamAV, etc.). Users running
competitive antivirus will still need to have recent antivirus
patterns/definitions in order to gain access.
-
Any users in full-year housing who are not typically required to run ruCompliant
in the spring semester will be automatically upgraded over the first few weeks
of the semester (if they haven't upgraded already).
-
Departmental Faculty & Staff:
-
A Departmental Upgrade Tool will be made available shortly to assist departments
in upgrading their users to RADS 5. This is a small application which can be
run independently or scheduled to start at login. It will analyze a system to
determine which RADS 5 server is most appropriate and instruct the existing
OfficeScan client to switch to that server. This will automatically upgrade the
client software.
-
Departments who have opted to supply us with network information will be contacted
to schedule an appropriate starting date for automatic server-side upgrades. On
the starting date, a flag will be set on the servers instructing all users on
those networks to move to a RADS 5 server and upgrade the client software.
-
All remaining on-campus users and departments will be moved to RADS 5.
Unfortunately, we will have no way to communicate this upgrade directly to end-users,
so you are encouraged to subscribe to RADS_ANNOUNCE (see below) and/or the
PC_LAN_ADMINS mailing lists.
-
Off-Campus Students, Faculty, and Staff:
-
All off-campus users will be instructed to move to a RADS 5 server and update
their client software.
-
Final Changes:
-
Any remaining RADS 4 users who were not automatically upgraded by the above
steps (this includes users in Roaming mode and users behind NAT routers)
will be handled by a network change. The Rutgers DNS servers will be
adjusted to point existing RADS 4 users to the RADS 5 servers. This will
effectively force all remaining clients to upgrade.
-
The existing RADS 4 servers will be decommissioned.
All communications related to this migration will be made via the RADS_ANNOUNCE
mailing list. If you have not already joined, you are encouraged to do so now.
This is a low-volume mailing list intended for infrastructure issues, scheduled
and unscheduled downtime, and urgent virus outbreak notifications.
